Before you buy a built-in cooker hob, it helps to know what the install involves. The job depends on your countertop, where the gas line sits, and whether you hire a professional.
Here is the basic process, so you know what to expect before you order.
Can you install it yourself?
No. Do not install a gas hob yourself. A qualified plumber or gas technician must handle the gas connection. A bad connection can lead to a gas leak, fire, or explosion.
The countertop cut also needs the right tools and skill. If you cut granite, marble, or wood the wrong way, you can chip or crack the surface.
Use a professional for both the cutout work and the gas connection.
What the installer needs before installation
Book the installer before the hob arrives if you can. When they visit to assess the job, they will check these points:
- The gas supply position. The gas inlet pipe must reach the hob connection point under the countertop. If the pipe sits in the wrong place, the installer may need to extend or move it. Add that to your cost estimate.
- The countertop material. Granite and marble need a diamond-edged blade. Wood and laminate are easier to cut. The material affects both time and cost.
- Cabinet space below. Built-in hobs sit in a cutout, but the cabinet below needs enough room. Make sure the cabinet height can handle the hob depth. Most standard hobs need at least 5 to 6 cm of free space below the unit.
- Ventilation. The space below the hob needs good airflow. Do not seal the cabinet below it completely. The underside of the hob gets hot during cooking.
The countertop cutout
The installer measures the cutout from the guide that comes with the hob. The measurements are specific to that model, so do not assume a standard size.
The cutout should be slightly smaller than the outer frame. The frame sits on the counter. A rubber seal keeps water out of the cabinet below.
If you are cutting granite or marble, this step usually takes 1 to 2 hours. The cutter works slowly to avoid cracks.
Once the cutout is ready, lower the hob into place. Check the fit before you connect anything.
Connect the gas supply
After the hob is in place, the technician connects the inlet to the gas supply. They use an approved flexible hose that runs through the cabinet below.
After the connection, the technician tests each burner. They check every joint for leaks with soapy water or detector spray. If bubbles appear, they tighten or reseal the joint before they finish the job.
Do not light a burner until the technician has checked everything and cleared the installation.
Test the FFD after installation
Modern glass top hobs include a flame failure device. After installation, test each burner. Light a burner, then cover the flame with a damp cloth. The FFD should cut the gas in 3 to 5 seconds. You should hear the gas stop. If it does not, tell the installer before they leave.
How long installation takes
A simple installation takes 2 to 4 hours when the gas supply is already in the right place.
If the job also needs cutting, pipe changes, or cabinet work, allow another hour or two.
What it usually costs
The cost depends on the countertop material, the gas pipe work, and the installer you choose. Ask for a written quote before work starts. A written quote helps if the job changes later.
Do not choose the cheapest installer just to save money. Bad gas work is dangerous. Use a qualified plumber or gas technician with experience.
After installation
Once the hob is installed and tested, clean the glass before first use. Remove any protective film and sticker residue. Read the manufacturer’s guide so you know how to light each burner properly.
Keep the installation guide and warranty papers somewhere easy to find. You will need the model details if you ever need parts or service later.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a cooker hob installation take?
The countertop cutout takes a carpenter one to two hours. A qualified technician needs 30 to 60 minutes for the gas connection. In a prepared kitchen, the full job usually finishes in one morning if both trades are booked for the same day.
Do you need to turn off the gas supply during installation?
Yes. The gas supply must be shut off at the cylinder valve before the technician connects the hob inlet. Never connect or disconnect gas fittings while the supply is running. The technician will test for leaks before turning it back on.
Can you reuse the countertop cutout if you replace the hob with a different model?
Sometimes. The new hob’s cutout dimensions must match the existing opening. If they do not, a carpenter needs to change the cutout. Measure both sizes before you order a replacement hob and check compatibility.
What happens if gas leaks after installation?
Shut off the cylinder valve immediately. Open windows and doors. Do not use electrical switches or make a spark. Leave the property and call a qualified gas technician. Do not try to find or fix the leak yourself.
