How to Clean a Glass Top Cooker Hob Without Scratching It

How to Clean a Glass Top Cooker Hob Without Scratching It

Glass top hobs look great when clean. They show every spill and smear when they are not. Daily cleaning takes about 3 minutes. The hard part is removing burnt-on food without scratching the glass. Scratches stay forever.

This guide works for all glass top cooker hobs. The steps are the same for every model.

Here is how to clean your glass top hob, for daily and deep cleaning.

Daily cleaning: after every cook

Let the hob cool down before you clean it. Glass holds heat longer than you think. Hold your hand a few centimetres above the surface to check before you touch it.

Once cool:

  1. Wipe the whole surface with a damp microfibre cloth. This picks up loose food and grease.
  2. For oily spots, put a drop of dish soap on the cloth and wipe again.
  3. Wipe dry with a clean cloth so no water marks show.

That is all for a light daily clean. A few minutes after every cook stops heavy build-up.

Removing light stains and residue

For dried food or light stains that do not wipe off:

  1. Wet a cloth with warm water and lay it flat over the stain.
  2. Leave it for 5 minutes. The moisture softens the stuck-on stuff.
  3. Wipe with the damp cloth using gentle circles.
  4. If stuff stays, use a glass hob cleaner. Put a small amount on, rub gently in circles, then wipe clean.

Do not use general kitchen sprays on glass hobs. Many have ammonia or gritty bits that dull the glass over time.

Removing burnt-on food

Burnt-on food is the hardest part. Boilovers and spills cook onto the hot glass and stick fast.

What you need: a hob scraper or a single-edge razor blade scraper for glass cooktops. This is the right tool for burnt-on food. A cloth alone will not move it.

How to use it:

  1. Make sure the hob is completely cold.
  2. Put a few drops of glass hob cleaner on the burnt spot. Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Hold the scraper at a very shallow angle, almost flat against the glass. Push it under the burnt stuff in short strokes.
  4. The stuff lifts off without scratching. Keep the angle shallow. Make sure the glass is clean first so no grit gets under the blade.
  5. Wipe away what you lifted with a damp cloth.
  6. Buff the area clean with a dry cloth.

Change the scraper blade if it gets nicked or pitted. A bad blade scratches glass even at a flat angle.

What not to use

Do not use:

  • Steel wool or scouring pads. These leave permanent deep scratches.
  • Abrasive powder cleaners like Vim. They scratch and dull the surface.
  • The rough side of a sponge. This causes fine scratching over time.
  • Bleach-based cleaners. They can damage the glass seals and parts around them.
  • Dry wiping with a rough cloth. Grit and food bits act like sandpaper.

Use instead:

  • Microfibre cloths
  • Glass hob cleaner
  • A hob scraper with a flat blade
  • Dish soap for daily grease

Cleaning the burner caps

The burner caps come off when cold. Wash them in hot soapy water with a soft brush. Clean the small holes around the burner ring where gas comes out. Food bits can block these and cause bad ignition.

Dry the caps fully before you put them back. Wet caps can cause ignition problems.

Preventing stains from forming

The best way to keep glass clean: wipe spills before they bake on. Keep a folded cloth near the hob while you cook. A quick wipe while the hob cools saves you the 20-minute deep clean later.

For boilovers that keep happening, turn the heat down a bit after the first boil. Do not boil at full heat the whole time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use a steel scrubbing pad on a glass top hob?

No. Steel wool and abrasive pads scratch the glass for good. Use a soft cloth, a non-scratch sponge, or a glass hob scraper blade for tough residue. Once you scratch the glass, the marks stay.

What removes yellow stains from a glass top hob?

Yellow stains from high heat are usually burnt sugar or oil. Soak the area with a few drops of dish soap and warm water for ten minutes. Then scrape gently with a blade at a shallow angle. Tough stains may need a ceramic hob cleaner paste from a kitchen shop.

Can you use vinegar to clean a glass top hob?

Yes. White vinegar mixed 50/50 with water cuts grease and leaves no marks. Spray on, leave for two minutes, then wipe clean with a soft cloth. Do not use straight vinegar on the burner fittings or metal parts.

How often should you do a deep clean on a glass top hob?

Once a week is enough for daily cooking. Wipe spills right after each cook so they do not bake on. A weekly deep clean with a scraper and detergent keeps burnt-on residue from building up. Clean the burner fittings once a month to stop grease from clogging the gas ports.
