How to Use a Hair Straightener: Step-by-Step Guide

How to Use a Hair Straightener: Step-by-Step Guide

A hair straightener works better when you use it the right way. Wrong technique causes frizz and uneven results. It can also damage your hair with heat.

Step 1: Start with clean, dry hair

Do not straighten dirty hair. Product build-up sits on the hair shaft. It causes uneven heat. The build-up also bakes onto the plates.

Your hair must be fully dry before you use heat. Wet or damp hair creates steam inside the shaft. This causes breakage. It makes hair brittle over time.

If you washed your hair, blow-dry it first.

Step 2: Apply heat protectant

Spray or apply heat protectant before you straighten. Work it from roots to ends.

Heat protectant does two things. It reduces moisture loss from the heat. It also cuts friction between the plates and the hair. This means less breakage.

Do not skip this step. The difference is big when you straighten regularly.

Step 3: Set the right temperature

Temperature guide by hair type

Hair type Recommended temperature
Fine or colour-treated 150°C to 170°C
Normal / medium thickness 175°C to 200°C
Thick or coarse 200°C to 220°C
Very thick or resistant Up to 230°C

Start at the lower end. You can do a second pass at a higher temperature if you need it. You cannot fix heat damage once it happens.

Step 4: Section the hair

Divide your hair into sections. Work from the bottom up. Clip the upper sections out of the way.

Small sections give better results. Thick sections mean the plates miss the inner hair. You get partially straightened hair with waves inside.

Make each section about the width of the plate. This gives full contact on every pass.

Step 5: Straighten each section

  1. Hold the iron with the plates open. Slide it to the root. Get close to the scalp but do not touch it.
  2. Close the plates around the section. Use gentle but firm pressure.
  3. Glide the iron down the length at a steady pace.
  4. Keep moving. If you pause, the heat burns one spot.
  5. Release at the ends. Do not clamp and pull at the tip. This causes breakage.

One slow pass works better than two fast ones. Move slowly enough for the heat to work.

Step 6: Let sections cool before touching

Let each section cool after you pass the iron. Touching warm hair disrupts the shape. Wait until it cools to touch it.

Use a wide-tooth comb if you need to check your work. Your fingers can cause frizz.

Step 7: Finish with a serum or oil

Apply a small amount of finishing serum or hair oil after straightening. It adds shine. It also seals the hair cuticle.

A sealed cuticle absorbs less moisture from the air. In Sri Lanka’s humidity, this stops frizz from coming back early.

Rub a small amount between your palms. Smooth it over the outside of the hair. Do not apply near the roots. It weighs hair down at the scalp.

Common mistakes

Using the iron on damp hair. The steam causes breakage inside the hair. Dry your hair fully first.

Sections that are too large. The inner hair does not get straightened. Section smaller and take more passes.

Moving too fast. One slow pass works better than two fast ones. Speed does not save time.

Leaving the iron in one place. Never hold a stationary iron on hair. Even one second of contact without movement can cause a burn mark.

Skipping heat protectant. Regular use without protection causes dryness and breakage within weeks.

Travel and voltage notes

Check the voltage rating if you travel with a hair iron. Sri Lanka uses 230V. Many countries use 110V to 120V. A 230V iron on a 110V outlet will not heat properly. A 110V iron on 230V will blow the heating element.

Dual-voltage irons switch between voltage ranges on their own. Check the label before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hot should a hair straightener be for Sri Lankan hair?

Sri Lankan hair is typically thick and wavy. Most people work well at 180°C to 200°C. Fine or colour-treated hair needs 150°C to 170°C. Thick coarse hair may need 200°C to 220°C. If one pass is not straightening the section, raise by 10°C. Do not go over the same section many times.

Can you use a hair straightener on extensions or wigs?

Only on heat-resistant synthetic or human hair extensions. Standard synthetic fibres melt above 120°C. Check the product label for heat tolerance first. Human hair extensions handle normal straightening temperatures.

Why does hair go frizzy again quickly after straightening?

The main cause is not sealing the cuticle after the iron passes. Let each section cool before you touch it. Apply a humidity-resistant finishing serum. In Sri Lanka’s humidity, skipping these steps brings frizz back within hours.

Is it safe to use a hair straightener every day?

Daily use at moderate temperatures with heat protectant is manageable. The risk comes from high heat without protectant. Going over the same section many times also hurts hair. Give your hair recovery time. Deep conditioning once a week helps.
