Recommended Hair Straightener Temperature by Hair Type

Recommended Hair Straightener Temperature by Hair Type

It is essential to heat your hair straightener to the right temperature while straightening your hair to achieve maximum sleekness and smoothness without undue damage. A higher temperature than required will cause thirsty strands, split ends, and fragile hair. A lower temperature than needed will not get the job done and force you to take over the same section, repeatedly increasing damage.

This simple guide assists you in selecting a proper temperature based on your hair type so that you can straighten your hair daily with the least risk. The recommended heat setting will depend on hair type, texture, and condition. Below is a general temperature guide:

Hair Type Recommended Temperature (°F) Recommended Temperature (°C)
Fine or Thin Hair 250°F – 300°F 120°C – 150°C
Normal Hair 300°F – 350°F 150°C – 175°C
Wavy Hair 320°F – 375°F 160°C – 190°C
Thick or Coarse Hair 375°F – 410°F 190°C – 210°C
Very Curly or Coily Hair 400°F – 450°F 200°C – 230°C

Choosing The Right Temperature For Your Hair Type

Fine or Thin Hair (250°F – 300°F / 120°C – 150°C)

Fine hair is most fragile, making it more prone to heat damage. Using a high temperature burns the hair shaft, making fine hair limp and brittle. So please stick to the lower end of the spectrum; always use ceramic straightening irons since they distribute heat evenly and lower the risk of hot spots.

Normal Hair (300°F – 350°F / 150°C – 175°C)

If your hair is somewhere in the middle, a medium heat setting is where it is best. It will ensure proper straightening without excessive heat exposure. For the most even heat, use a tourmaline or ceramic straightener.

Wavy Hair (320°F – 375°F / 160°C – 190°C)

Wavy hair usually needs slightly higher heat than fine hair, but you do not want to fry it completely. Working in the 320°F – 375°F range (160°C – 190°C) allows hair to be straightened with one pass without excessive heat exposure.

Thick or Coarse Hair (375°F – 410°F / 190°C – 210°C)

The outer cuticle of thick or coarse hair is sturdier and needs more heat to straighten. Keeping the temperature between 375°F and 410°F ensures a smooth finish with fewer passes. For thick hair, titanium flat irons are recommended because they heat up fast and maintain the heat.

Very Curly or Coily Hair (400°F – 450°F / 200°C – 230°C)

Curly and coily hair types, which are highly textured, require the highest heat settings. So, for Types 3 and 4 curls, a setting of 400°F —450°F or 200°C —230°C should yield the best straightening results. That said, high heat over time may lead to heat damage and loss of curl pattern, so always use a heat-protectant spray and do not straighten daily.
